Main opposition SYRIZA President Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday demanded "complete transparency" and "justice" for the death of 27-year-old Vassilis Maggos, with posts on social media.

"In a strong, modern and serious democratic state there are laws, procedures and an organised functioning for investigating the cause of death of a young person," Tsipras said, noting that all sides have an obligation to respect these.

"Especially the competent minister, who yesterday rushing to pre-empt the coroner's report without finding two words to say about the unprecedented police brutality, as was proved by the audiovisual material that has been released," Tsipras added.

"The only response there can be is complete transparency and justice. This is what is demanded by respect for the memory of a young person who has unfairly gone and for his family who mourn him. Certainly not aspersions, unanswered questions, impunity and suspect actions in the investigation of the cause of death of Vassilis Maggos," SYRIZA's leader noted, expressing his deepest condolences to the young man's family and loved ones. Prior to his death a few days ago, the 27-year-old had lodged an official complaint that he had been the victim of police brutality.
