Meeting on the issue of Hagia Sophia underway at the foreign ministry

Newsroom

A meeting on Greece's response to Hagia Sophia's conversion into a mosque was underway at the foreign ministry on Wednesday, in order for Greece to best coordinate its next actions to raise awareness of this issue on a global level.

Following the Turkish government's recent decision to change the status of the UNESCO World Heritage Site from a museum to mosque, a decision that has been internationally condemned, Greece is working to mobilise the international community to protect the monument.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, the Ambassador of Greece to Unesco, Maria Diamantopoulou, the Chair of the Greek National Committee for Unesco, Ekaterini Tzitzikosta and officials.
