Russia considers the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) a cornerstone of the international regime that governs the seas, the Russian Embassy in Athens posted on Thursday on Twitter.

"Russia's position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council is a position of principle... The Convention explicitly foresees the sovereign right of all countries to territorial waters of up to 12 nautical miles and outlines the principles and the manner of delineating an Exclusive Economic Zone. This also applies to the Mediterranean."
