Thessaloniki: Four towns collect 20 tonnes of election material for recycling

Four townships of the greater Thessaloniki area collected 20 tonnes of paper from last Sunday's combined elections and turned it over to recyclers as part of a waste management programme in Central Macedonia.

President of the Agency for the Management of Solid Waste Michalis Geranis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) that other towns are also collecting such paper, which includes ballots and flyers from the Europarliament, regional and local elections on May 26.

"The recycled paper will return to local communities," Geranis said, "at a great benefit, as 150,000 trees had to be cut down to produce the amount of paper used for Euroelections and regional elections throughout Europe," he said.

The same can be done for national elections on July 7, he said. "The more we recycle, the more we help our environment and the Greek economy," he told ANA.
