PM Tsipras: 'There is an overwhelming majority against Manfred Weber's candidacy'

The European People's Party (EPP) member Manfred Weber faced "an overwhelming majority" opposing his candidacy for the presidency of the European Commission, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a social media post on Monday.

"It is a candidacy that does not unite but separates Europe and which was eventually rejected," underlined Tsipras after EU postponed a decision until Tuesday. He noted that there is a "strong majority in favor of Franz Timmermann's candidacy, which we support, as do the progressive forces of Europe."

"Greece once again aligned with the forces that want an open, progressive and social Europe," Tsipras wrote.
