Mitsotakis can't continue distorting the truth over the Prespes Agreement, Achtsioglou says
NewsroomNew Democracy's (ND) unreliability and double talk, even on crucial national issues, have been proved by the new evidence published on Tuesday regarding ND's stance on the name of Greece's northern neighbour, stated SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Effie Achtsioglou.
"The letters that were revealed confirm that it was not just a tactical move, as ND sought to justify it, but an official political position. The framework that ND approved was that of a double name, which allowed the neighbouring country to use another name (Macedonia) in its interior and recommended the name "Macedonia-Skopje" for external use, while allowing most [countries] abroad to also call it simply 'Macedonia'. No geographic qualifier and no erga omnes, just as there was no revision of the constitution. At the same time, ND agreed to the 'unfreeze' the neighbouring country's EU accession prospects," Achtsioglou said.
"Mitsotakis (ND leader) is obliged to reply; he cannot continue to deceive the Greek people by distorting the truth over the Prespes Agreement or to insult the citizens with his silence," she added.
