Sec Skourletis: 'SYRIZA new members means a lot more than a mere reg. no.'

Discussing the reorganizational prospects and potential adjustments to the party's political profile following the losses at the July 7 national elections, SYRIZA party central committee secretary Panos Skourletis on Sunday said that "the 31.5 pct SYRIZA won in the election, although not enough for a win, could be the springboard for a new Left and a wider progressive course," he said in Documento newspaper on Sunday.

Regarding the issue of party mobilization and a broader appeal, he said that "the registration of new members can primarily be transformed into an effort to strengthen our presence in public spaces", and that party members "mean a lot more than a mere registration number, it is the integration into the organization of a meaningful political relationship," emphasized Skourletis.

"In short," he said, "we want many new members with substantial rights-not just new followers."

Skourletis says that SYRIZA "must shape the identity of the new pluralist Left of our time, that will incorporate the most creative ideas and processes of all the forces of the broader Left and progressive political scene."

He pointed out that all this "fleshes out when composed on the basis of a comprehensive framework proposal, which will shape our political profile and comprise the bulwark of our presence as the main opposition."

The SYRIZA party secretary finally noted that "we will build our alliances on the basis of such a program, in an effort to shape new social and political majorities that will lead to new major changes for the benefit of the great majority of our people."
