High temperatures to prevail in Greece this week

Newsroom

Unusually high temperatures for the season are expected to prevail in Greece this week, with temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius. An uncommon pattern of atmospheric circulation in the northern hemisphere will lead to extraordinarily high temperatures for the winter season in Europe, the meteo service of the Athens National Observatory said.

Already from Sunday, high temperatures were recorded in central Europe with the mercury rising to 14C in Munich, for example, 10 degrees higher than normal for this time of year.

The estimated temperature deviation at roughly 1,500 altitude is expected to hit record temperatures in central and eastern Europe.

The highest positive deviation from the average temperatures in the period spanning 1979-2010 are expected in the north and eastern Balkans on Wednesday, while in Greece the temperature is forecast to rise significantly, exceeding 20C.
