Independent Greeks (ANEL), the former ruling coalition partner of SYRIZA, said they had tabled a request with UNESCO on Monday "to protect the intangible cultural heritage of Macedonians, which includes the name of our Macedonia."

In a statement that referred to the Prespes Agreement between Greece and North Macedonia which it strongly opposed, ANEL said they had "taken a first step towards justice".

"We request the protection of the exclusive use of the terms 'Macedonia, Macedonian' and of the Macedonian culture, which began 2,500 years ago and continues to our days," it said. "We are requesting that the heritage of Macedonians be included on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity."
