A search-and-rescue team on Wednesday located the dead body of a 26-year-old British man who had been missing since last Sunday, when he went hiking in the Zagoria region in northwestern Greece. The body was found in a gorge near Astraka peak.
Due to the difficulty of the terrain and the danger to rescue workers, an operation to retrieve the dead man will begin on Thursday morning, authorities said.
The young Briton, who had left his hotel in Konitsa on Sunday morning to go hiking in the surrounding mountains, was reported missing by his father via the 112 emergency number. A search was mounted and the man's car was found parked in the village Mikro Papigo on Monday evening.
The search resumed at dawn on Wednesday with the assistance of two sniffer dogs and a police helicopter.
